Kuba zeigte Begeisterung für die Entscheidung des Austragungsortes "Olympia 2016" zugunsten von Brasilien, welches ein wichtiger politischer Verbündeter der Regierung des Karibikstaates ist. Der  ehemalige kubanische Präsident, "El Comandante" Fidel Castro, sagte, die Wahl Rio de Janeiros  "ist ein Triumph der Dritten Welt." 

Der Triumph der brasilianischen Stadt Rio de Janeiro ist ein Beleg für den wachsenden Einfluss der Länder Lateinamerikas ", sagte der kubanische Revolutionsführer.

Der Präsident des kubanischen Olympischen Komitees, Jose Ramon Fernandez, sagte: "Wir sind sehr froh, daß diese große Stadt von Brasilien als Austragungsort fuer die Olympischen Spiele 2016 gewählt wurde.

Es ist eine große Freude für Lateinamerika".
